TIL my grandma's mayo on grapefruit trick might not be a joke, argue with me

So last Tuesday I called my grandma in Toledo to check in, and she casually said she puts a spoonful of mayo on grapefruit halves instead of sugar. I laughed, but then I tried it on Saturday and the creamy tang actually cuts the bitter in a way I didn't expect. On one hand, it's basically a savory citrus salad dressing, which sounds insane. On the other hand, she's been eating this since the 1950s and she's 89, so maybe she's onto something nobody talked about. Which side are you on, and what's the weirdest thing a relative convinced you to taste that actually worked?
