A talk with a firefighter in Boise made me look at creosote differently
I was having coffee with a friend who works for the city fire department, and he told me about a call they had last winter. A chimney fire in a house on the north side, nothing too wild, but he said the thing that stuck with him was the homeowner saying they'd had the chimney cleaned 'just a couple years ago.' My friend looked right at me and said, 'You guys see the buildup from the outside, but we see what it does inside the walls when it gets hot.' That hit different. I've always explained the risk of fire, but hearing him describe the hidden damage, the heat traveling through old mortar, it changed how I talk to customers. Now I don't just say 'it's dirty,' I describe what that heat can do to their house. Has anyone else had a conversation that changed how you explain the 'why' behind our work?

That line about seeing what it does inside the walls is a gut punch. I used to just mumble something about safety codes and move on. Now I find myself pointing at the flue and saying, "Look, this gunk is basically a slow-burning fuse running into your attic." Makes me sound like a bad action movie, but it gets the point across way better than my old spiel.

Honestly that's the best way to get through to people. My old landlord used to just send these dry emails about "maintenance schedules" until a pipe burst. After that he started saying "this boiler is a ticking time bomb" and suddenly everyone paid attention. You gotta speak their language, even if it makes you sound like you're in a straight-to-DVD thriller.

Slow-burning fuse" is such a good way to put it. Reminds me of trying to warn my old roommate about the weird smell from our outlet. I kept saying "it's probably faulty wiring" and he just shrugged. Finally I said "dude, this thing smells like a robot's burnt toast, it's gonna light up the wall." He called the super the next day.
