A talk with my cousin's neighbor in Boise changed how I see creosote logs
He's a retired firefighter and said he's seen more chimney fires in the last two years, and he thinks those store-bought creosote logs give people a false sense of safety. He told me, 'They clean the middle, but leave the real danger up in the smoke shelf.' It made me realize I need to explain that better to my own customers. How do you guys talk about chemical cleaners versus a full sweep?

Wait, he's seen more fires in just the last two years? That's a crazy short time for a trend like that to show up. It really does sound like those logs are tricking people into skipping the real clean. I've always worried they just move the gunk around instead of getting it out.

Has anyone actually looked at what those logs leave behind though? @hayes.joel you're right, they totally just smear the creosote around instead of scraping it off. I had a buddy who used them three times in a row and his chimney guy found a thick glaze that was way harder to remove. Now he's back to paying for a proper sweep every year.
