Can we talk about brushing with the shop vac first instead of the wire brush
Did a sweep in Council Bluffs yesterday and the homeowner asked why I always run the vac before scrubbing, and I didn't have a real answer besides habit. Later that night I watched a video from a sweep in Maine who brushes first, then vacuums, and he pulled out almost double the soot I got on a similar flue, so I think I've been doing it backwards for 3 years. Any of you brush before you vacuum, or am I overthinking this?
The "vac before scrubbing" thing is actually what most of us were taught, so you're not crazy for running it that way. But I gotta push back on switching to brush first, because dry soot falls down the flue and just piles up at the base where your vac hose can't reach, and now you're breathing all that dust while you scrub. Vac first knocks down the loose stuff so the brush doesn't send it flying, then you hit it with the brush and do a second pass if you need to.
