Honestly, I used to just use a basic brush and rods for every job, but after a chimney fire scare in a 1920s house in Portland last fall, I switched to a SootMaster rotary system. The difference in creosote removal is night and day.

Oh man, a chimney fire scare will do that to you. Guess you're a believer in the fancy spinny brushes now.

You ever see those videos where the whole chimney turns into a flamethrower? That mental picture is now my main cleaning motivator. I went from a basic brush to a power drill attachment so fast it would make your head spin. It's not about being fancy, it's about not having to call the fire department for a stupid reason. Let's just say I'm a very thorough chimney inspector now.

My buddy's neighbor had one of those chimney fires last winter. It sounded like a jet engine taking off from his roof. The whole street was out in pajamas watching the fire department hose it down. He said the cleanup was a nightmare, black soot dust over everything in the attic. That's all the reason I need to keep up with the brush.
