I swore by spiral rods until a 90 degree bend humbled me

I'm a big fan of the flexible rods for most jobs, but last week in Salem I hit a chimney with a sharp 90 degree offset about 15 feet up. I spent 3 hours wrestling the spiral rod, thinking it would just work its way through, but it kept binding at the same spot. Finally I borrowed a set of sectional rods with a swivel connector from a buddy and got it cleared in 20 minutes flat. It really changed my mind about which kit should live in my truck full time. Has anyone else found that sectional rods beat flex rods on tight offsets, or was it just this weird flue?

That "humbled me" part rings true, but I usually find flex rods win on the weird angles because they don't kink up like sections can. Maybe that chimney just had a spot where the spiral head was grabbing instead of sliding, and a different tip would have solved it. I keep both in the truck, but the flex rod still gets pulled out first more often than not.
