Update: That 1 to 10 creosote scale I saw at a supply house in Bangor changed how I talk to customers
Stopped into a supply house in Bangor last month and the guy behind the counter had a laminated chart on the wall showing creosote stages from 1 to 10, not the 1 to 3 most of us were taught. I always called anything past stage 2 a problem, but this chart treated 1 through 4 as normal buildup and only flagged 5 and up as a real fire risk. It came from a training sheet put out by a state fire marshal's office, so it is not just some sales gimmick. I tried explaining stage 3 glaze to a customer last week and her eyes glazed over, so I went back to plain talk about how thick it is and whether it is crusty or shiny. Now I am second guessing every report I wrote this season. Has anyone else seen a 10 point scale, or is this just a regional thing up north?
