Figured out I was marking studs all backwards
I was out on a job last week in a old house in Cleveland, putting up some shelving in a garage. I kept hitting the edge of studs with my screws, barely catching them, and thought it was just bad luck. Then a guy I was working with pointed out I was measuring from the wrong side of the outlet boxes. Turns out I'd been doing it that way for about 8 years, just guessing at center. Has anyone else realized they were doing a basic thing like this completely wrong for way too long?

The "measuring from the wrong side of the outlet boxes" thing hit way too close to home. I spent like two years framing in my basement and always missed studs when hanging drywall. Turns out I was marking my layout from the wrong edge of the plate because I'd seen a YouTube video where a guy did it backwards. Felt pretty dumb when my buddy pointed it out, but at least you figured it out after 8 years, that's rough.

Wait, is this actually that big of a deal though? I've been hanging drywall for years and I just use a laser level and mark my studs after the sheet is up. Never even thought about measuring from the outlet boxes or plates. Seems like a lot of stress over something you could fix with a $20 stud finder. Sure, it's annoying when you miss a stud, but two years of frustration? I dunno, maybe just grab a different YouTube video next time instead of sticking with the wrong one.
