Question about the old guy at the lumber yard who told me my bid was too low
Watched a guy I've known for 20 years walk my estimate sheet back to my truck in Reno last month and tap the framing line twice before he said "this number is why you eat beans." What do you all say to folks who tell you to raise your prices, do you listen or roll your eyes?
That tap on the framing line is the whole lesson right there. He's not saying your work is bad, he's saying you priced the part of the job that eats the most time and money like it was nothing. Break the framing down by the day, figure what your crew and saw time actually cost you, add your margin on top of that, then see if the number still makes you wince. If it does, that's the number. The old guys at the yard have watched plenty of guys go under bidding jobs just to keep the phone ringing.
