A guy at my old Best Buy threw a $700 TV box at me over a $25 restocking fee
I worked the customer service desk at a Best Buy in Columbus for two years and I thought I had seen it all until this dude came in with a 55 inch TV he bought three days earlier. He wanted a full refund but our policy back then took $25 off for opened electronics, and he lost his mind over twenty five bucks. He screamed that we were thieves, then he picked up the box and chucked it at my chest, and I caught it mostly out of pure panic. Security walked him out and he kept yelling that he was calling corporate, and honestly the whole thing took maybe four minutes but I still think about it years later. What got me was how fast a grown man went from calm to throwing stuff over a fee smaller than his lunch probably cost. Now I work a different retail job and I see the same look in people's eyes when I mention any kind of fee, and I just brace myself. Has anyone else had a customer snap over a small charge like that, and how do you deescalate without it turning into a scene?
Man, I feel this one. What worked for me was saying the fee out loud before I even touched the receipt, like "heads up, opening the box means it comes off the refund, want me to keep going?" Just getting it out there early killed most of the blowups. One lady still got loud over a $15 charge and I stopped, dropped my voice to almost a whisper, and said "I hear you, I don't set the rules, but I can walk you through who does." She calmed down partly because everyone around us was staring at her, not me. If they're already grabbing stuff, though, you just back up and let security handle it, no fee is worth a broken nose.
