A lady threw a $12 salad at me over ranch, but the regular who just says 'whatever's fresh' never complains
So I work at a diner in Fort Worth and a lady ordered a cobb salad with ranch on the side, then lost it when I brought it out, said I was trying to ruin her meal, and tossed the whole thing at the counter. Cost the shop about $12 in wasted food and me a good 15 minutes cleaning up. Meanwhile this older guy named Ray comes in most mornings, never looks at the menu, just says 'whatever's fresh' and thanks me no matter what shows up. Same kitchen, same cooks, two totally different outcomes. Anyone else notice the people who hand over the choice are way happier than the ones who micromanage every little thing?
Man, yes. I waited tables for years and the "whatever's fresh" folks were always my favorite. There was this one couple that came in every Sunday and just told me to surprise them, never once sent anything back, tipped well, remembered my name. Then you'd get the guy who wants his eggs at a very specific temperature and asks you to check if the orange juice is "actually fresh" and it's a whole thing. You'd bend over backwards and they'd still find something to be mad about. The easygoing ones are handing you the wheel and trusting you, and that trust usually comes back around. The control freaks are already mad before they walk in.
