Guy at Home Depot argued with me for 20 minutes about which paint roller to use

Man, that's a solid point about the sales goal thing, Lucasjackson - I can totally picture some manager breathing down his neck about microfiber rollers. I'm pretty sure half my arguments at hardware stores are just me confidently pretending I know what I'm doing, you know, like picking the wrong roller and then blaming it on the paint. Honestly, I'd probably agree with anything after 20 minutes just to get out of there and go home.

I was at Home Depot last Tuesday and had almost the exact same experience. A guy in the orange apron spent a solid 15 minutes trying to sell me on a microfiber roller for my ceiling. In my experience, a lot of those employees get pushed to sell certain brands or tools by their managers, so I don't think he was trying to be a jerk. He probably just has to hit a sales goal for the day and got frustrated when you didn't go along with it. I'd say take the advice with a grain of salt and just grab whatever roller you've used before that works for you.
