I finally looked up what the average retail return rate actually is and it blew my mind

Found a stat from the National Retail Federation saying 16.5% of all merchandise gets returned and that explains why the customer who brought back a half-eaten bag of chips last month didn't even get a side-eye from my manager, has anyone else's store quietly stopped asking questions about weird returns?

16.5% doesn't sound that crazy to me honestly lol. Half eaten bag of chips probably just means they bought it, tried one, and realized they hate that flavor. I bet the real number is higher if you count the people who don't bother returning stuff but still complain about it.
