Stopped trusting customer return excuses after the 14th dead hamster story

I used to take every return at face value, especially the wild ones. Then a woman in Milwaukee tried to return a blender claiming it 'exploded on its own' and the crumbs inside told a different story. Now I check every single item myself and ask for a photo if they say it's broken. The funny ones are entertainment, but the scam ones cost real money. Anyone else start cataloging repeat excuse-makers after getting burned?

My buddy worked retail at a big box store and had a guy swear up and down his lawnmower caught fire on its own. The whole thing smelled like gasoline and burnt grass, obviously. They pulled the air filter out and found a half-eaten sandwich wrapper stuffed inside, like someone tried to hide a snack in there. The guy doubled down, said his neighbor's kid must have done it. My buddy just stared at him until the guy grabbed the mower and left all embarrassed. That story still cracks me up whenever I hear someone complain about strict return policies.
