That $90 gift card scam call almost got me at work
Had a customer try to get me to process a $90 gift card refund over the phone because a 'Microsoft tech' told them their computer was hacked. I stopped it and explained the scam, but they went to the next register and almost fell for it again with a $150 card. So many elderly folks lose real money this way, has anyone else had to talk someone out of a similar call lately?
The part nobody talks about is what happens after you stop the scam. That customer went right to the next register, which means the caller was still on the phone with them the whole time. These scammers coach people through every step, even telling them to ignore the cashier if they warn them. A little known trick is to ask the customer to hand you the phone so you can speak to the "tech support" directly. Nine times out of ten they hang up fast, because they do not want to deal with someone who knows the game. That one move has saved more refunds than any explanation I have given.
