That guy who tried to pay for an oil change with a check from 1992
Had a fella come into my shop last Tuesday with a 1987 Chevy pickup that needed an oil change and a filter swap. Whole job was maybe $45 with tax. He pulls out this old checkbook and writes me a check for the amount... I look at it and the check itself says '1992' printed on it in the corner. I told him straight up I can't take that, checks expire after 6 months usually. He got all huffy and said 'money is money' and started arguing that I should call his bank to verify the account still existed. Like dude, that's not how any of this works. I just stood there holding his old rusty check and said I'll take cash or a card but not a relic. He finally fished out some crumpled twenties from his pocket and grumbled the whole time I was under his hood. Anyone else get people trying to pay with expired checks or weird old currency?

Man I gotta ask, what did that check even look like? Was it all faded and crumbly like something dug out of a time capsule, or did he keep it in mint condition like a weird collector's item?

Used to think he was nuts, but now I get it.

Oh for SURE, it was faded! The paper was all yellowed and thin, like you'd crinkle it just by looking at it wrong. Same thing happened with my dad's old pay stubs from his first job, they were just as fragile. @the_emma you should've seen the look on his face when I asked if he kept it in a safe deposit box, he was dead serious about it being in a folder "for protection.
