Bought a $300 portable monitor in Bangkok, it died in 6 weeks

I grabbed one of those cheap portable monitors off a stall in Chatuchak market because I needed a second screen for client calls on the road. It worked fine for about a month, then the backlight started flickering and now it's a black brick, the seller's WhatsApp number is dead. Anyone else get burned by gear from markets while hopping between countries, or is it just me and my bad luck?
