Coworking space in Chiang Mai taught me a brutal lesson about backup drives
I was at Punspace in Chiang Mai last month, typing away on a client project due in 48 hours. My external SSD made that awful clicking sound and then just died. Lost 3 months of client files, photos, everything. Now I keep a second 1TB drive in my bag and do a full backup every Sunday at my guesthouse. Plus I signed up for Backblaze for 6 bucks a month. Has anyone else had a hard drive fail while traveling and lose important stuff?
Man, that clicking sound is the absolute worst - you know when you hear it that it's game over for the drive. I've had a similar thing happen with an old portable drive on a road trip and it just wiped out a bunch of family photos I never got back. Backblaze is smart, I do the same thing now and keep a separate copy in my bag just in case the guesthouse gets robbed or something.
