Warning: That $35 knife sharpener from Amazon ruined my favorite chef's knife

I was torn between getting a cheap pull-through sharpener or saving up for whetstones. Ended up buying the affordable gadget and it took chunks out of my blade after three uses (totally my fault for trusting it). Now I'm out the cost of the sharpener plus the knife repair. Anyone else have luck with those budget sharpeners or am I just bad at using them?

My pull-through sharpener ended up making my knife look like a cheese grater (oops).

24 dollars down the drain and a ruined chef's knife taught me the same lesson, @alice_hart. Those pull-through things just rip at the edge instead of actually grinding it. I switched to a simple whetstone and even with my shaky hands and no practice, my knives actually get sharp now instead of looking like I tried to use a cheese grater on them.

Wait fr I used to think pull-through sharpeners were fine but @alice_hart your story and this post just changed my whole mind.
