Appreciation post: My grandma's old pickle jar trick finally made sense
For years, my sauerkraut would get a weird film on top after about a week. I tried using a fancy airlock lid, but it didn't help. Last month, I remembered my grandma just used a clean cabbage leaf and a small glass weight to keep everything under the brine. I tried that with a quart jar, and after 10 days, it was perfect, no film at all. Has anyone else found the simple old ways work better than new gear sometimes?

My kraut always looked like a science experiment.

Ever see that weird white film on top? I had a jar that looked like a ghost kraut for a solid week.

My buddy's first batch grew a whole fuzzy rainbow on top. He got so scared he threw the whole jar out the back door. Sometimes fermentation just goes real wrong before it goes right.
