My brother told me to skip the airlock for my sauerkraut and just burp the jar

He said he'd done it for years in his Chicago apartment with no issues, so I tried it with my last batch. After two days, the pressure blew the lid off and I had cabbage juice all over my kitchen ceiling. Has anyone else had a burping method go wrong, or is there a trick I missed?

Oh man. My friend tried that with ginger beer once and we found a sticky brown puddle behind his fridge three months later.

@garcia.tyler that vinegar idea sounds smart, but three months is a long time for a puddle to hide. A sticky brown mess behind the fridge is a nasty surprise. I can't even imagine the smell that must have made. That story makes me want to check behind all my appliances right now. Your friend must have had a real cleaning job after that.
