My kimchi jar turned into a science project in my kitchen
I was trying a new recipe with extra fish sauce last week, and the lid on my big glass jar wasn't on right. Came home from work to find a bright red river of kimchi juice had leaked all over my counter and down the cabinet. The whole place smelled like a seafood market for two days. Anyone have a good trick for checking if a lid is sealed without making a mess?

Learned this the hard way after my own jar burped and painted my fridge door pink. My method now is to put the whole sealed jar in a big mixing bowl before I leave it alone for the day. If it leaks, it's contained. If the bowl is dry after 24 hours, you're probably safe to put it anywhere. It's not a perfect test, but it saves your cabinets.

Tried the bowl trick... saved my countertops too.

Seriously, that bowl method is just asking for trouble. You're still risking a mess if the jar really goes off, and now you've wasted a big bowl for a whole day. Just tighten the lid properly and check it after a few hours like a normal person.
