How online radio stations brought back the joy of finding new music

I've noticed lately that everyone seems stuck on the same playlists from streaming apps, and it got boring hearing the same songs all the time. So I tried something different and started listening to online radio stations from places far away. What helped me was picking a city I've never been to and finding a local station that streams for free. For instance, I tuned into a station from Tokyo that plays city pop and now I have a whole new genre to enjoy. You can just let it play in the background while you're doing chores or relaxing. I make a point to try one new station each weekend, and it feels like exploring without leaving home. My tip is to search for 'independent radio' plus a style of music you like but don't know much about. It's made my listening time way more interesting and personal.

Wait, you just casually found a Tokyo station? That's wild, my local ones barely come in clear.

Caught a Brazilian radio signal during a thunderstorm last year. The atmospheric conditions must have been perfect for it to travel that far. Makes you wonder what else is out there, @fisher.dylan, if we could only tune in properly.

Try picking up anything besides static on my handheld radio last storm. Managed to get a fuzzy ad for a tractor auction three states away, which felt like a win. Honestly, if I caught a Brazilian station, I'd probably assume it was just someone's microwave interfering. My reception skills are that bad.
