Just realized my local paper's critic got replaced by a clickbait writer

I was reading reviews for the new superhero movie, and EVERY single one said the same thing. It's like they're all scared to have a real opinion anymore. I miss when critics would actually debate and disagree. Now it's just a chorus of safe takes that don't help me decide what to watch. It makes me wonder if they even care about movies anymore.

I totally misread a critic's joke at a screening and made a fool of myself

So I was at this movie premiere for a weird indie film last week. A well-known critic sat beside me and muttered, 'This film is a masterpiece of failure.' I thought he was being serious and started gushing about how bold the choices were. I even pointed out the shaky camera work as intentional art. He just gave me this blank stare and didn't say another word. Later, I saw his review calling it the worst movie of the year. My face still gets hot thinking about how I praised it to his face. Now I wait for the written review before I agree with any critic's comments.

Warning: My Blu-ray organizing spree led me to question modern review aggregators.

I mean, I was alphabetizing my collection and idk, maybe it's just me but I started comparing old printed reviews to current Rotten Tomatoes scores. It's frustrating how nuanced criticism gets flattened into a percentage, you know? I kind of miss when critics had more space to elaborate. Does anyone else feel like aggregated scores miss the point?
